brrr - I just thoughtfully added a "0" option, and the first 50 votes are now lost. Those who voted and did not have that option can vote automatically again ....

Great idea Dennis!
While we are waiting for direct flights an unbelievably cheap combination to get to Calabria on 2 flights in peak summer months is:
Easyjet fights from the UK to Milan Malpensa which are usually very cheap flights and then Alitalia from Milan Malpensa down to Lamezia which via their AirOne brand look to be very cheap too.
As Alitalia usually run numerous flights from Milan to Lamezia within one day, it makes it possible quite often to get the right gap between the connecting flights 2-3 hours is usually the ideal gap, not too long a wait but not so close for delays on the prior flight and therefore missing the next flight if the gap is too close.
We have just booked for our summer holidays 7 return flights to include; Easyjet to Milan and Alitalia to Lamezia either way including all charges, 4 suitcases, taxes and credit card charge for a total of £811, that's £115.85 per person return covering 2 flights either way in peak season! Other combinations were coming out at £1800 - £2,500, took lots of searching though!
Main thing is the Easyjet to Milan is a cheap flight and Milan to Lamezia with AirOne is also a cheap flight, this might bring Easyjet's flights to Lamezia from Milan in the summer months down, as fairly expensive at the moment.

Great news Alex, that's incredibly cheap! We found it convenient with Easyjet from Lamezia to Rome Fiumicino and then BA to Heathrow.
On this thread it is OK to vote and post as guest as many people who will be receiving the link are not necessarily forum members.

Hi ,I have just signed the petition and selected 20. However last year the actual number was 28! that equates to 5 weeks occupancy by 4 people and 4 weeks occupancy by 2 people, it does mount up. Also when you take into account what the hire car companies will lose not to mention petrol stations, supermarkets restaurants bars shops tourist activities not to mention gelatria. A conservative estimate must be around 5000 euro between them all which the local economy in Calabria will be missing out on, all this from 1 apartment!!!Let us hope that some one decides to fly direct from London soon.

Thanks Dennis
Great idea for petition again. Come on everybody, please sign.
I have also booked the same route as you Alex in June, and because I don't have any luggage, my cost was £104.00 per person all in.

I totally agree with Finally as when I consider what I spend when I go to Calabria if I include car hire as well, it all comes to a quite tidy sum plus when family are borrrowing my apartment who would not probably do so if they have to get 2 flights the figure is multiplied considerably I would be very suprised that if the local government was also given these figures on how much money is and will be spent in Calabria they don't put pressure on the airports and airlines to come up with a solution.

it's not just our flights, it is also the flights of our family and friends who will be visiting our apartment when we are not in calabria.

FaceBook group http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=304849552915Hi, We have an apartment near Pizzo and while we also are managing connecting flights via Milan we are finding it difficult to rent our apartment because there are no direct flights. We have had plenty of enquiries but then the feedback is that the lack of flights is a major problem so no bookings. I think this is a more serious issue than getting there ourselves because rentals lead to even more people needing flights and this isn't shown on your petition so will skew thefigures. Ray

Less than 24 hours later we have:
310 votes, good for 2341 return flights between Lamezia and London 723 pageviews 77 members in the FaceBook group: Low Cost to Lamezia
Not a bad start, let's try to keep the momentum!
Assuming that we do not all travel at the same time, and that there are 180 seats on the planes (737) we have enough people on board for 26 full planes ((2341x2)/180)=26. That means one a week from April to October.
Dennis.

Well done, in such a short time.
But we need twice as many!
You have 2341 return tickets. So that transfers 4682 bodies. each plane return trip transfers 360 bodies (2 times 180 capacity). So that is 13 round trips for the plane. So one plane a week for 13 weeks.
Sorry about that! Suggest keep voting.

These numbers are made up of buyers/investors who have bought here in Calabria from abroad.. lets not forget the thousands of Italians and other holiday makers who would love to use this service from round the globe who travel thru London and would like to visit the south of Italy at low cost prices... so there are many more flights possible and would most likely fill planes for 6 - 9 months ... the whole idea of low cost is to get as many bums on seats as possible .... one-way or return ... doesn't matter to them ...
Thnx Dennis Talk Soon

Sorry to throw cold water on this, but...
Firstly, If I were a planner in an airline I would have considerably more sophisticated traffic planning tools than relying on requests from holidaymakers. It won't do any harm but I don't think it will do much good either.
More importantly, when you're doing the sums on the number of extra travellers, you're forgetting that these people are already getting there; often by buying four tickets per round trip on the same airlines.
What matters is the total increase in traffic for the airline and direct flights may actually reduce the numbers and the income.
So, if you want direct flights, stop flying there at all!

Hi there, We live in Calabria all year round and are suffering from not having direct flights. On average we make a total of 12 - 15 return flights per year, and have relatives trying to visit us for another 12 - 15 return flights per year. I really hope that your petition gets things to change.

we go to calabria on average every six weeks and are desperate for direct flights (its been six very long months as weekends are not ideal when having to catch 2 flights!).

Hi Dennis. Reinstatement would be good but as we live in Rochdale a more central departure airport would be nicer even a flight from up north. We will sign it but if it is only from London perhaps a more civilised departure time might be suggested. Regards Alistair

We too are from the North, but as we are petitioning for a direct flight from UK to Lamezia, where there is none at the moment, I don't think we are in a position to start saying which airport we want to fly from and what time of day the flights should be. I believe we should all concentrate on trying to reinstate a proven, well used, direct link between Stansted and Lamezia, and to let Dennis and Alex try and influence Lamezia Terme in any way they can with all our support.
